U.S. Coast Guard Stations on Long Island
The phone numbers provided here are for the purpose of obtaining general information
only. In the event of a real emergency, Dial 911.
Use of "Mayday" All marine patrol vessels and the U.S. Coast Guard monitor channel 16 on the VHF marine radio.
The Coast Guard monitors this channel 24 hours a day. Reserve "Mayday" only if grave danger exist, your boat is taking on water, there's a fire on board, a person is overboard, there's been a collision, or someone on board has a serious injury. "Mayday" is an international distress signal. It comes from the French verb m'aidez, which means "help me." When you call for a Mayday, not only will the Coast Guard and/or a marine patrol vessel respond, but other boaters who are monitoring the frequency may respond as well.
