Use of "Mayday"
All marine patrol vessels and
the U.S. Coast Guard monitor
channel 16 on the VHF marine
radio.






The Coast Guard monitors this
channel 24 hours a day.
Reserve "Mayday" only if grave
danger exist, your boat is taking
on water, there's a fire on
board, a person is overboard,
there's been a collision, or
someone on board has a
serious injury. "Mayday" is an
international distress signal. It
comes from the French verb
m'aidez, which means "help me."
When you call for a Mayday,
not only will the Coast Guard
and/or a marine patrol vessel  
respond, but other boaters who
are monitoring the frequency
may respond as well.

display the on board distress
signals which may be observed
by patrol vessels, persons on
shore, aircraft or other boaters.
Dial 911 for Emergencies
